Retrospective of Nikolaus Geyrhalter's work
+ Polish premiere of THE STANDSTILL

"Nikolaus Geyrhalter is one of the most recognisable contemporary documentary filmmakers. His films are characterised by extraordinary formal sensitivity. With unparalleled care, the Austrian master composes images whose hallmarks are perfectly chosen frames and long, hypnotic takes. These films must be seen on the big screen. But contrary to appearances, Geyrhalter does not escape reality in them. This year's winner of the Marek Nowicki Award for special achievements in portraying human rights in film has always been interested in topics that cannot be considered secondary. And he has consistently tried to show them from a non-obvious side."

MATTER OUT OF PLACE
by Nikolaus Geyrhalter

The Jury statement:
"The jury recognises the universal theme of the film, successfully balancing between a global and local perspective. The film shows in a balanced way the problem of waste disposal as a meeting pot of technology, culture and social practices. Thanks to the intended lack of dramaturgy, the film creates a meaningful analogy to the aesthetics of everyday life, exploring at the same time the layers of what is unobvious and mysterious. Although various recycling techniques, shown on the case studies of Switzerland, Albania, Nepal, the Maldives and other regions, come to the fore of the film's story, it is also a deeply humanistic tale about the responsibility that rests on all of us living in a global network of ecological connections and conditions. The minimalist aesthetics of the film, combined with the scale of the film’s subject matter, successfully emphasizes the importance of the issue and makes the film “Matter Out of Place” an important voice in the discussion about a clean environment at every latitude and longitude."

MATTER OUT OF PLACE
by Nikolaus Geyrhalter

“A thought-provoking work of art that addresses our time’s most critical issue and the need for urgent solutions, this film offers its unique perspective by creating a distance between the viewer and the problem, revealing the alien and strange nature of waste. Through a signature detached yet observant eye, it offers a visual study of the global waste management issue, leaving the viewer engrossed in the absurdity of the problem and questioning how it came to be. Furthermore, the film's aesthetic approach, a mix of pictorial beauty and realism, adds to its power, reminding us that the problem is imminent, urgent, and massive.”

ALPENLAND

by Robert Schabus

wins the main award at the Tegernsee Mountain Filmfestival:

Great Prize by the City of Tegernsee

"This film by Robert Schabus offers a timely representation of the mountains, and also represents our times. Impressive wide angles and laconic long shots reveal how the evolution of our civilisation endangers the habitat of 13 million people across eight countries. The cinematic narrative connects diverse stories from the entire Alpine region: A Carinthian mountain farming family is worried about the future subsistence of their farm. A world-famous Bavarian ski resort cannot exist without snow cannons, each of which costs as much as a social housing unit. A French doctor worries about medical care because more and more hotels in the mountain valley are shutting down. Over the course of 32 years, a Portuguese mountain railway employee in Zermatt has witnessed the glacier recede by 700 metres. An Italian farmer seems like a true outsider, because he prefers to be with the sheep and earn poorly than to work for more money in the factory. Does sustainability have to equal poverty? Do we have to give up economic growth to save the world? This mountain film does not answer such questions, but it makes us think deeply about them."

TALES OF FRANZ
by Johannes Schmid

won the

Golden Goat for Best Feature Film for Children

"The Golden Goats in the feature films for children category goes to Tales of Franz directed by Johannes Schmid. The international jury recognized the film for being a simple but engaging story told from the perspective of children, an honest and funny picture of kids in modern families with all their love and troubles. The vivid and truthful performance of the child actors delivers a powerful message: Be yourself, since everyone is special!"

ROBOLOVE
by Maria Arlamovsky

A special prize, awarded by a jury of juvenile and young adult prisoners of JSA Regis-Breitingen:
"On the one hand, the range of possibilities offered by this technology is beguiling, but nonetheless we find ourselves asking whether a system which gradually renders human-to-human contact obsolete is really the way ahead. How far are you personally prepared to share all your thoughts and feelings with the rest of the world via a robot? Questions like this occupied us for many hours and were the subject of much debate."
